Our Story

My wife Lizzie has Multiple Sclerosis.

Several years ago, I was in the lobby of a medical supply store while her wheelchair was being repaired. The gentleman next to me was sitting in a high-tech looking electric wheelchair. I asked him about it, and he said it was a new, state-of-the-art standing chair.

I told him I had just been on the Internet looking at standing chairs for Lizzie, but that the cost was just too staggering and not covered at all by insurance.

We chatted a while, then he smiled and said, "If Lizzie can use it, I will give her my old one."

He did just that. And it turns out he was actually our neighbor and lived only three miles down the street.

That was in 2005, and Lizzie has used the chair every day since. It has made a huge difference in her life.

Isn't that a great story? Such a wonderful and generous thing for someone to do for someone else.

As a physical therapist myself, I know that many patients go without basic equipment they simply can't afford. I also know many families have used wheelchairs, walkers and other self-care equipment they no longer use and have no idea of what to do with it. Equipment that could improve the quality of life for someone else is just gathering dust in back rooms and garages.

That's how SelfCareExchange.com was conceived.

We wanted a means to connect those in need with those who can help.
